How to Use a Manual Chain Hoist

by admin on January 5, 2011

A manual chain hoist is one of the most common tools used around the home for lifting heavy objects. Often called “cherry pickers”, these manual devices are operated using a ratchet system that makes it easier to lift car motors, pallets of goods and other household items.

The Basics

A manual chain hoist is a fairly straightforward machine to use. The hoist will have a chain and pulley system that it works with. As the chain is pulled down around the item that you are lifting the pulley will begin to work inside the housing of the machine. The hoist will have a hook on the end of the chain that is used to attach to whatever you need to lift. You need to wrap a second chain carefully around the items you are lifting to ensure they won’t slip once they are up in the air. It is often a good idea to wrap a chain on all sides of the item and then connect each side to the main hook on the hoist.

The amount of weight that you can lift with a manual chain hoist will vary depending on the size of the hoist you are using. Most small chain hoists can lift about a half-ton while there are other industrial sized hoists that can lift several tons. For a manually operated hoist smaller weights are more manageable, however. You simply need to pull on the hoisting chain using even movements until the items are lifted as high as you need them to be.

Choosing a Hoist

A manual chain hoist is a great addition to your tools and garage. These machines can be used for auto and home repairs and to move any size items as needed. Most manual hoists work with a ratchet system or a pulley system that holds the chain in place once the item has been lifted. Most home use hoists are made to lift about a half-ton but there are many options available for stronger lifting power. There are manual hoists that can lift up to five tons and that take up little space in your home garage. These hoists are portable and very simple to use.

Your manual chain hoist can be any size that you like. Sizing up to a stronger hoist is a good idea if you have varied uses for you hoist. For instance, if you need a one-half ton hoist then sizing up to a one ton machine may be helpful if you need to lift something heavier in the future. Your hoist can be used for many jobs and will be long lasting with the proper maintenance.

Maintenance

Caring for a manual chain hoist is fairly easy. You do need to lubricate the pulley system occasionally to ensure it pulls smoothly. You may also want to check the chains periodically. Any broken links should be repaired or replaced before using your manual chain lift again to ensure nothing you are hoisting falls.
